Homeopathic Medicine FAQs
What is the difference between homeopathy and naturopathy?
ANSWER: Naturopaths study a variety of alternative healing methods, including homeopathy, but receive what amounts to a basic training in these modalities. Homeopaths specialize in homeopathic medicine, which is a complete medical system in its own right. Both Homeopathy and Naturopathy are regulated health professions in the province of Ontario.
Can I use the title ‘homeopathic doctor’ or the credential ‘HD’ when I graduate?
ANSWER: The use of the ‘homeopathic doctor’ title and the ‘HD’ credential are not provided for in the new legislation (Homeopathy Act) at this time. Therefore it is illegal and inappropriate to use it. We prefer to use the title ‘homeopathic practitioner’ or ‘homeopath’.
What is the difference between TSHM and other Ontario colleges?
ANSWER: Although we all teach homeopathy, the actual content and methodology can be quite different. We pride ourselves on presenting a solid foundation steeped in the tradition of the old masters of homeopathy. It is important to us that our students learn and fully understand the fundamentals as specified in the Organon of Medicine so that what they see and hear in the classroom is fully supported in the classic literature and is consistently reproduceable in the clinic. We offer a comprehensive three-year program that has produced hundreds of graduates in our fifteen-year history as Ontario’s longest-running homeopathic medical school. Our longevity speaks to our success in providing the most thorough, relevant and enjoyable training. With the variety of institutions offering courses in homeopathy, it is not an easy matter deciding which is going to be right for you. If you want a training which is assessed to the highest standards, first see whether it is recognized and accredited by the Council on Homeopathic Education who have a very rigorous system of validating schools. It is important that you investigate all options before making your final decision. You should feel certain that the school you choose most suits your needs, beliefs and values, and gives you the best preparation and support for professional practice. Quality should be high on your list of criteria. In making your evaluation it is wise to talk to practitioners and students to get feedback on their learning experiences and recommendations. Attend student-for-a-day sessions if offered and experience first-hand what the school has to offer. We are dedicated to, and teach the homeopathy of Samuel Hahnemann as described in his Organon of the Medical Art and elaborated by classic and contemporary practitioners. While homeopathic methodology is a science, its practice is an art based upon observation and assessment of the deeper, underlying roots of suffering. We therefore pay attention to the philosophy of healing as well as the dynamics of practice. We have a vision of an open, shared experience of homeopathy, where asking "how?" and "why?" is valued as highly as knowing the answers to questions. Your personal learning process is honoured, whether your strengths are artistic or intellectual. We aim to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment where students can continue to develop their intuitive, imaginative and reasoning faculties and integrate body, mind and spirit. We provide learning experiences from lectures, texts, diagrams, video and audio recordings, individual and group activities, and guided research projects, so as to acquire, appraise and creatively extend the student's knowledge and skills of homeopathic practice. Our aim is to give you the very best training that we can. We cultivate holistic approaches to health and sickness, which include perspectives of soul and spirit as well as body and ecology. We choose to stay true to the vitalist medical tradition of homeopathy. Our emphasis is on providing a thorough, insightful, inspirational education in homeopathy with adequate supporting practical training in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, physical examination and nutrition. We wish you well in your future in homeopathy and hope that you will consider joining us to assist you in developing your qualities as a professional homeopath.
