Miasm – Metaphor and Truth by Tmima Stein, April 2008

Introduction

More than 200 years have passed since Samuel Hahnemann began producing his systematic treatise of ‘right’ medical practise in the form of Homeopathy. He was not the first to recognize ‘similia similibus curateur’; ‘likes are cured by likes’, though it was he who developed the highly ordered principles in application of the art. It was only later into his practise, that he developed a greater appreciation of chronic diseases and the mysterious obstacles to cure they represented.

Many of Hahnemann’s original theories and conclusions remain firmly rooted in contemporary Homeopathic practise. Over the years there have been additions, expansions, perversions, abuses and neglect of his great insight, but one thing has remained abundantly clear – Homeopathy is an energy-based medicine, capable of facilitating energetic response in the body. To fully grasp the magnitude of this truth one need only consider Newton’s Laws of motion:

  1. Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. (aka; Law of Inertia)

  2. The relationship between an object’s mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F=ma. Acceleration and force are vectors; in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector.

  3. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

In the late 19th century theosophist Helena P. Blavatsky introduced ageless sets of principles to be formally considered in her two volumes of ‘The Secret Doctrine’. Of these principles, she identified the prevalence of the energetic qualities of the Seven Rays, which throughout our ancient and modern history have been evidenced. Energetic action and reaction to an evolutionary process present in science, astrology, and archaeological finds. Bound in legendary mythology and theology she established a broader landscape upon which Homeopathic and Life principles may be considered and applied.

This paper will examine the energetic quality of miasmatic behaviour, as Hahnemann outlined in The Chronic Diseases. Further it will demonstrate the energetic legitimacy of the Life Force, by utilizing the available resources of Theosophical and Esoteric philosophies to demonstrate the seven streams of naturally occurring energy influence which animate our world. The correlation of energetic behaviour and Homeopathic practise is to provide a larger framework for the Homeopathic practitioner to consider when assembling a truly complete picture of symptom totality.

As Hahnemann himself dedicated the 6th edition of The Organon of the Medical Art, ‘Aude sapere’; ‘Dare to Know’, that is precisely what the purpose of this paper will be.

The Memory of Water: A Critical Analysis of the Science behind a Homeopathic Theory by Sarah Lyn Hutchinson, April 2008

Introduction

The concept of water having a memory is most often referred to as a possible explanation for how homeopathy works. When one first learns about homeopathy, the process of dilution and succussion is explained as a process by which each remedy is diluted over and over again, and at each stage of dilution the remedy gets vigorously (yet methodically) shaken. Common sense tells us that the more something is diluted, the weaker it becomes. Yet in homeopathic practice, we observe the effects of remedies increasing through this process. Even homeopaths would agree that simple dilution would not produce effective remedies. Hahnemann himself knew that results were soon lost when substances were diluted without succussion as mentioned in the Organon (footnote 269d, p. 237):

“Daily we hear homeopathic medicinal potencies referred to as mere dilutions when they are, in fact, the opposite. There is a true opening up of the natural substances produced by trituration and succussion, bringing to the revelatory light of day the specific medicinal powers that lie hidden in their inner wesen. The non-medicinal dilution medium merely helps as a supervening accessory condition. For example, the simple dilution of a grain of salt in a large amount of water results in just plain water; the grain of salt disappears and never becomes the medicinal salt [natrum muriaticum] that our well-prepared dynamizations have heightened to such admirable strength.”

Hahnemann describes, at length, the exact process that must be followed in dilution and succussion, not only in the Organon but in his Lesser Writings as well. Unfortunately, he often referred to potentization as releasing “internal, spirit-like medicinal powers”, which led to great criticism from the orthodox medical community. From his time until present, any reference to spirit usually lowers credibility as spirit is not known to be scientifically proven. Even using the term “dynamization” implies some kind of etheric nature to the process, which then gets written off as metaphysical and unscientific. Most scientists and physicians dismiss homeopathy as quackery due to this seemingly flawed theory of spirit and invisible powers. However more and more research is being done within physics which is revealing to us a microscopic world that is far more complex than anyone could have imagined.

Some argue that technology is not yet advanced enough to measure the activity of a homeopathic remedy. Others say that the homeopathic paradigm is so outside the realm of scientific protocol that it cannot be confirmed within the medical-science confines, as we know them. Still others think homeopathy is being suppressed from research and the social mainstream due to pharmaceutical corporate control. One thing is certain, Natural Law supersedes any theory humanity can propose. If homeopathy obeys Natural Law, as we study in our homeopathic education to be true, then there is a method of proof waiting for discovery. Quantum physics seems to be the most likely field by which this discovery is waiting.

It is common, acceptable theory that the three dimensional structure of a molecule can play as significant a role in how that substance behaves as does its chemical formula; for example the allotropes of carbon. When carbon is crystallized due to low temperature and high pressure, it becomes a diamond. It is still chemically carbon, but the carbon atoms are tetrahedrally bonded in structure. This different form of bonding fundamentally changes its physical properties. On the opposite spectrum of carbon, we have graphite. Again, chemically still carbon but it is bonded in hexagonal or rhombohedral structure. The memory of water theory suggests that water also has the ability to change its structure, and therefore its properties.

The basic principle of the water memory concept is that water can retain a “memory” of the substances it has been previously exposed to and can therefore maintain the properties of those substances, even after the physical substance is removed. The most common questions that arise are: How does it do this? Why does it seem to have a “selective memory” for only the homeopathic substance? How does the body then interpret this message? And why, if homeopathy seems so convinced of the evidence, is the rest of the world not listening?

The Homeopathic Treatment of Cancer by S. Farrell

Introduction

Cancer is a disease which is chronic in nature. It is an imbalance of the Vital Force of subtle onset and gradual progression throughout which the Vital Fore offers unsatisfactory resistance. Since cancer is a chronic disease, it can be successfully treated and/or prevented by addressing the underlying energetic imbalance of the Vital Force.

One of the best means to achieve this goal is through Homeopathic treatment. In order for Homeopathic treatment to be effective, treatment must first be targeted at the specific organ or tissue affected by the cancer. Remedies that target the cancer tumour must then be given to eliminate the overgrown pathology. When the tumour is eradicated and the patient is vital enough, then the underlying energetic imbalance may be addressed by careful constitutional prescribing.

Through careful prescribing, cancer may be prevented by addressing the inherent susceptibility and removing any irrational or maintaining causes of the otherwise healthy individual. “He is likewise a sustainer of health if he knows the things that disturb health, that engender and maintain disease, and is aware of how to remove them from healthy people.”

The Review of the Homeopathic Concept of Susceptibility by Raha Mohammad-Panah

Introduction

In epidemiology a susceptible individual is a member of a population who is at risk of becoming infected by a disease if he or she is exposed to the infectious agent1. This is in most cases associated with a higher sensitivity of these individuals to a specific exogenous or endogenous substance or a physicalagent. Different fundamental and clinical researches2, 3 have suspected genes, acquired factors, and environment exposures, as well as nutritional factors and their interactions, as eventual causes for the susceptibility.

Therefore, in order to gain more certainty, more research is now being conducted to study mechanisms of susceptibility, molecular epidemiology and functional genomics (identifying genes involved in individual susceptibility). Among these investigations, medical and scientific interests are mostly focused on the genomic aspect and the use of the knowledge gathered from the human genome project, which identified a multitude of polymorphic genes involved in the causation of differences of susceptibility of subgroups of populations.

In practice, the investigation of susceptibility often deals with populations exposed to an agent. The differential risk of a subgroup with a specific polymorphism in certain genes or bearing other inherited or acquired factors is then determined. Some examples of the most recent research are the identification of genetic risk factor for prostate2 cancer, which is the third-leading cause of cancer related death in men or breast cancer3, which is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today. This project, which is called "The Cancer Genetic Markers of Susceptibility", is a three year, $14 million initiative that will identify genetic alterations that make people susceptible toprostate and breast cancer.

According to the medical and scientific society, this research will allow new insights into etiology and pathogenesis of human disease and provide the basis for improved strategies for prevention, diagnosis and individualized treatment to combat cancer. This is especially important as many patients sufferfrom chemo- and radiotherapy's side effects. Individualization of radio- or chemotherapy doses or of other medications may decrease their side effects and make the treatment more efficient.

As a scientist, I was, and am, always fascinated with new discoveries and projects for the future. But as a person who has had the opportunity to study homeopathy, I am enthralled to know that conventional medicine with all the sophisticated technologies that it possesses and all high platforms that it uses, has chosen to attempt to individualize medications, something that has been practiced by homeopathy for over 200 years. Therefore, after viewing the definition and understanding of the concept of the susceptibility by the current medical and scientific world, I will attempt to review the concept of susceptibility by investigating homeopathic literature.
